Key Initiatives and Programs
Uganda Democracy Academy
Launched in July 2023, the Uganda Democracy Academy is a flagship program by NIMD aimed at nurturing young political leaders. The academy provides participants with comprehensive training on political theory, leadership skills, gender and disability inclusion, digital democracy, and political communication. The initiative seeks to equip young politicians with the necessary tools to contribute effectively to Uganda’s democratic processes.
Multiparty Youth Forum
Complementing the efforts of the Democracy Academy, NIMD established the Multiparty Youth Forum. This platform facilitates cross-party collaboration among young political leaders, encouraging dialogue and consensus-building. The forum aims to unite youth voices behind common initiatives and proposals to enhance meaningful political participation among young people.
Women’s Political Participation
NIMD places a strong emphasis on promoting women’s involvement in politics. Through collaborations with organizations such as UN Women, NIMD has conducted dialogues and training sessions aimed at enhancing the capacity of women leaders within political parties. These efforts focus on addressing challenges that hinder women’s participation and developing strategies to increase their representation in political processes.
Partnerships and Collaborations
NIMD’s work in Uganda is supported by various partnerships. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds programs like the Strategic Interventions Programme and the Power of Dialogue programme. Additionally, the Uganda Democracy Academy is implemented as part of the WYDE Civic Engagement programme, supported by the European Union and the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).
Through its office in Kampala, NIMD continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening Uganda’s democratic landscape. By focusing on youth engagement, women’s political participation, and fostering dialogue among political entities, NIMD contributes significantly to building an inclusive and resilient democracy in Uganda.
